The recent MRO show in Atlanta, GA focuses on the aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul market.  We feel that this market is perfect fit for 3d scanning to develop design data for replacement parts that are no longer in service.

Although we had many visitors to view the Steinbichler L3D scanner in our booth, we had a  great many more that were drawn in to see our Objet 24 3d printer.

Although many of our visitors were enamored with the concept of 3D printing, many other were a bit disappointed that we’re not currently 3D printing flight hardware.  That concept is still a few years off, as even metal based additive manufacturing systems do not produce parts with the same material properties as their traditional manufacturing counterparts.

3D printing is still primarily used for prototyping, to help evaluate the fit form and function of new designs.

The good news is that technology in this sector is improving at an extraordinary rate, and new materials are being released routinely.  So, we won’t have to wait too many years in the future for replacement parts for aging aircraft to be produced in short order by this amazing technology.
